44. The Last of Us, in Calgary /with English translation

A The Last of Us című legújabb filmsorozat az idei év nagy HBO slágere; állítólag a magyar nézők is nagyon várták már. Hogy mi miért voltunk izgatottak itt Calgary-ben igazán? Olvass tovább, kiderül a blogcikkből! :)

A 9 részből álló sorozat egy poszt-apokaliptikus dráma, mely egy videójáték alapján készült. Bár biztos vagyok benne, sok gamer-nek nem kell bemutatni a történetet, de íme egy rövid összefoglaló a többiek kedvéért: "2003-ban egy gombafertőzés járványt indít el, amitől vérszomjas ragadozókká válnak az emberek. (Nem szép látvány. Nagyon nem.) A széria középpontjában Joel Miller áll, akit megbíznak azzal, hogy a karanténzónán kívülre vigyen el egy Ellie nevű lányt. Ellie immunis a gombára, bár megtámadták, nem változott ragadozóvá. Így ő lehet a gyógyír a betegségre."( "Elle" magazin alapján)

The latest HBO series The Last of Us has been a major hit this year; it is said that Hungarian viewers were eagerly waiting for it. Why were we really excited here in Calgary? Keep reading, it will be revealed in the blog post! 

The 9-episode series is a post-apocalyptic drama based on a video game. Although I'm sure many gamers don't need an introduction to the story, here's a brief summary for the others: "In 2003, a fungal infection triggers an outbreak that turns people into bloodthirsty predators. (Not a pretty sight. Really not.) The series centers around Joel Miller, who is tasked with taking a girl named Ellie outside the quarantine zone. Ellie is immune to the fungus; although she was attacked, she didn't turn into a predator. So, she might be the cure for the disease." (based on Elle Magazine)

Joelt, a főhőst Pedro Pascal alakítja, aki ismerős lehet a Trónok harcából és a Star Wars-ból, Ellie szerepében pedig Bella Ramsey-t láthatjuk. A 19 éves színésznő szintén játszott a Trónok harcában, ő alakította Lyanna Mormontot. Láttam egy interjút a brit lánnyal, ahol elmesélte, milyen élmény volt amerikai akcentust tanulnia a film kedvéért. ( Kevés híres brit film van a piacon, így még neki is tanulnia kell ;)  Állítólag az olive oil egy nagyon nehezen kiejthető szókapcsolat volt számára... szóval végül káromkodáson keresztül szedte fel a megfelelő kiejtéseket. ;)

Joel, the main protagonist, is played by Pedro Pascal, who may be familiar from Game of Thrones and Star Wars. Ellie is portrayed by Bella Ramsey, the 19-year-old actress who also appeared in Game of Thrones as Lyanna Mormont. I saw an interview with the British actress where she shared her experience of learning an American accent for the film. (There are few famous British films on the market, so even she had to learn it!) Apparently, olive oil was a particularly tricky phrase for her, and she picked up the correct pronunciation through swearing. ;) 

Bár a film az USÁ-ban játszódik, a forgatás Kanadában zajlott egy egész éven keresztül ( 2021 júl. - 2022 június). Pedro Pascal óriási örömmel mesélt a kanadai vendégszeretetről, a filmiparban dolgozók szűnni nem akaró odaadásról és a lélegzetelállító kanadai tájakról. (Te már ezt korábban láthattad a blogposztok egy részében. :) 

Although the film is set in the US, the shooting took place in Canada for an entire year (from July 2021 to June 2022). Pedro Pascal enthusiastically spoke about the Canadian hospitality, the unwavering dedication of the people working in the film industry, and the breathtaking Canadian landscapes. (You may have already seen this in some of my previous blog posts. :) 

És hogy miért olyan óriási dolog ez számunkra? A forgatások több helyszínen zajlottak, méghozzá itt nálunk, Alberta tartományban! Az első epizód részei: Calgary, High River és Fort MacLeod városában, a második epizód helyszínei pedig: Calgary és Edmonton (Alberta fővárosa) voltak. Igaz, sokszor nehezen felismerhetően, amolyan poszt-apokaliptikusan drámaiak lettek a városunk bizonyos részei, híres épületei -- de azért nem csaphatnak be! :)

And why is this such a big deal for us? The filming took place at multiple locations right here in Alberta! The first episode was shot in Calgary, High River, and Fort MacLeod, while the second episode was filmed in Calgary and Edmonton (the capital of Alberta). Although many parts of our city and its famous buildings were transformed into post-apocalyptic, dramatic settings, we can still recognize them! :)

Filming took place downtown between 5th and 4th Street:

For those familiar with Calgary, you might recognize parts of downtown:

1. 4th Ave Flyover (near Bridgeland, next to our former school) – Featured in episode 2 (see the picture below).

2. 1 Street & 12 Ave, SW – The location for the Bostonian Museum scene in episode 2 (where Tess… but no spoilers!) (see the pictures below).

Persze messze nem csak városi helyszíneket láthatunk majd a sorozatban! Az egész éven át tartó forgatás során a stábnak volt lehetősége mindenfelé eljutni (a préritől a Sziklás-hegységig) és mindenféle évszakot megélni és megörökíteni. Ahogy olvastam, Canmore kisvárosa lett a főszereplők kedvence --  aláírom :), mi is gyakran autókázunk arra, mert egy igazi kis gyöngyszem a Sziklás-hegység tövében.

Of course, we won't only see urban locations in the series! Throughout the year-long filming, the crew had the opportunity to travel everywhere, from the prairies to the Rocky Mountains, experiencing and capturing all seasons. As I read, Canmore became a favourite spot for the main cast – I totally agree! We often drive there too, as it's a true gem at the foot of the Rockies.

Craig Mazin forgatókönyvíró a következőket nyilatkozta a kanadai forgatásról:

"We needed to feel the movement of Joel and Ellie through space and time. Space means diversity of environment and time means seasons -- it means weather. We needed snow, we got snow! We needed it to be cold, it was cold! But we also had the Canadian Rockies. We had Canmore... We needed people on horseback, no problem. We needed some of the best stunt people in the world -- they were there....While we were bringing crew in from Vancouver as well, there was an enormous amount of fantastic people working in Alberta... We've been everywhere, and it was a delight. And I miss Calgary and I miss all the folks there. It was an incredible experience to shoot there."

A filmforgatás a kanadai televíziózás eddigi legnagyobb projektjévé nőtte ki magát. A hivatalos adatokat még nem erősítették meg, de az egészen biztos, hogy a bekerülési költség jóval túllépi a 8 számjegyű összeget (10 millió US dollárt), epizódonként! Az HBO eddigi legnagyobb költségvetésű filmje! 

The film production has become the largest project in Canadian television history. While official figures have not been confirmed, it is certain that the production cost far exceeds eight figures (10 million US dollars) per episode. This makes it HBO's most expensive series to date. 

Nos, egyelőre itt tartunk, izgatottan várjuk az újabb AHA moment-eket, amikor újra felismerjük a városunk (trükkökkel el)rejtett részeit!

Nézd meg a sorozatot, ha teheted, már csak a helyszínek miatt is! ;)

At this point, we're eagerly waiting for more "AHA moments" when we recognize hidden parts of our city in the show (with a bit of movie magic, of course)! If you can, definitely check out the series—if not for the story, then at least for the locations! ;) 

A legújabb nagy volumenű projectek Calgary utcáin pedig:

- a Fargo 5. évada, 2023 áprilisáig, 

- a Dark Match című horror film 

- és a High School (ami egy alt-pop duó, Tegan és Sara Quin történetét dolgozza fel a 90-es évekből. A valószínűleg inkább kanadaiaknak szóló filmet azért említem meg, mert fontos esemény fűződik a nevükhöz a családunkban. Ők azok, akik meghívást kaptak a Crescent Heights High School Graduation Ceremony (2022. évi érettségi átadójára) és a Lányom kérték fel, hogy készítsenek neki egy-egy festményt, emlékbe. :)

Calgary is currently hosting some exciting high-profile projects, including the 5th season of Fargo (by April 2023), the horror film Dark Match, and High School—a series about the alt-pop duo Tegan and Sara Quin from the 90s. The latter is particularly special to our family, as Tegan and Sara were invited to the 2022 Crescent Heights High School Graduation Ceremony, where they asked my daughter to create a painting for them as a keepsake. :)

Ha mégsem a te világod a fenti műfaj, jó hírem van: Calgary és környéke számos filmnek adott otthont az elmúlt évtizedekben is. Az ismertebbek közül: a Jég veled!,  jamaikai bobosai itt "versenyeztek" a Canada Olympic Parkban és a Heartland (lovak szerelmeseinek szóló ) című sorozatot pedig a filmesek körében oly népszerű High Riverben forgatták. És forgatják immár a 15. évadot.

If the genres mentioned aren't your cup of tea, here's some good news: Calgary and its surroundings have hosted numerous films over the past decades. Among the more famous ones are Cool Runnings (the Jamaican bobsled team raced at Canada Olympic Park) and Heartland (a series for horse lovers filmed in High River). In fact, the 15th season is currently in production!
